Something About English Teaching

So I know it's been a long goddam time since I wrote anything about English teaching.

Hell, it's been a long time since I've DONE any English teaching. Damn near six months now.

So here's one: I made this video a month or so ago and completely forgot to promote it here, as I got sidetracked with this trip to Costa Rica. I thought I might do some work on that shit down here, but that hasn't happened; when I get back, I'm going to make a series of these to promote the book SPEAKING ACTIVITIES THAT DON'T SUCK.

Just as soon as I finish learning to surf here in Costa Rica. Cowabunga!

So the idea of this is to illustrate how annoying, boring, pointless and tedious the usual English class is. Enjoy!
And what's more you'll get to hear my deep rich sexy voice, compared by some to Kermit the Frog. And my stellar voice acting.

Not the greatest in production value, but good video nonetheless that makes the point well.

hee hee. Okay, look, the crude and primitive ETX "house style" is long established. I've been using those same cartoons for 10 years, cut and pasted all kinds of ways. What do you expect me to do, hire a team of Korean animators?

I heard Korean animators go for pretty cheap these days.

A frumpy yet idealist young woman would never "teach" that way. We like, know what we're doing up there!! This teaching style is more common with your 22-year-old former frat boys.

I have observed plenty of frumpies in action, and it was always much as I pictured -- as long as they were rambling about grammar, or whatever was in the book, they felt they were doing a good job. At least frat boys tell funny stories.

But the frat boys would spend the whole lesson telling (really rather dull) stories about themselves then try to knob one of their students. The chances of going on to doing the job right probably tend towards the frumpy idealist. However the idealistic thing makes me want to give myself paper cuts and pour lemon juice on them. Listen up now (and I hope Mr X agrees) 'They are not your friends! They are your students.'

Err - that's not Olivia Lala. That's me Ken MacDougall. Please don't send her anything horrible. She's my lovely step-daughter and there was a signing in mistake.

anyway I certainly wasn't trying to say that Frumpy Idealistic Women are the only teachers who suck, it's just an example of sucky teaching in general. They are the ones who are most surprised and indignant when you tell them they suck, however.

Has ETX achieved the great English teacher dream- being able to live abroad in exotic lands without teaching English?
