The End

Fifteen years ago, on or about February 1st, 2003, I sat in my cruddy but beloved apartment in Samara, Russia and used a battered Pentium 1 desktop given to me by a student to make the first posts on an Angelfire website, marking the beginning of the English Teacher X website.

And for fifteen years I chronicled my observations of life as I saw it, from the twisted surrealist vantage point of an expat abroad, in a world that changed tremendously during that period of time, from the first optimistic bursts of globalism to its current last wheezing gasps.

So now it is with some regret that I must announce:

This is the last blog post I will make.

Why?

Well, the question is more, "Why not?"

Fifteen years is a long time to do anything, much less write the same blog. I've been running out of steam for a while now, obviously; not just because I'm getting older, but because I've already said everything I wanted to say.

Not everything I've got to say, perhaps, but everything I wanted to say.

Anything else I said would likely just be a variation on what has come before.

I thought for a long time about how I wanted to end it. I could end with a sick joke; a hoax suicide, for example. I thought maybe in the spirit of keeping the blog a comedy, I would end it when I married the Girlfriend.

I thought about turning the blog over to somebody else -- Crazy Bob, for example -- or opening it to "guest posts" from anybody.

But the more I thought about it, the more I realized that English Teacher X just had to vanish into the night and the fog.

I'm uncomfortable with the internet now. (And perhaps with life in general.) It's a strange humorless place now, where everyone has a strident political agenda; Nazis on one side and on the other a world where everybody eats avocado toast and never say anything offensive. There's little place for lumbering dinosaurs like myself to air my private parts.

So what will become of X?

Well, look around you. He might be anywhere.

He might be that drunk angry guy teaching in the next office, stinking and red-faced. He might be that happily married, quiet fellow with the foreign wife and the cute kid.

Maybe he went out in a blaze of glory, some kind of balls to the wall orgy of drugs and sex and hate.

Maybe his foreign hosts finally hunted him down and destroyed him.

Maybe he became the quiet old guy living with his cats, always meek and polite before dying quietly with the kitties licking his face.

Maybe he's all of those, or none, but one thing is for sure ... English Teacher X abides. English Teacher X will be teaching, here, there and everywhere, and this blog will stay here, an eternal monument to all those moments in time that would otherwise be lost in the rain.

I won't be answering e-mail at the yahoo address; it became overwhelmed with spam. You can leave messages for me here, I might answer them.

Goodbye folks. I sincerely thank you for reading.

Be careful out there!

Yeah it's a wasteland. Which is why exactly why your blog stood out as a gem amongst the tripe.

> I've already said everything I wanted to say

A fine reason to throw in the towel. Keep the site alive though - your writing, especially about Thailand, is gold. And the archives have a lot of wisdom to impart to the next generation of English Teacher X's (English teacher Y's?) Googling for advice on how to live the ebook dream.

Best of luck!

What happened to the book you were going to write about your early years?

englishteacherx said...

Yeah, the problem was, in addition to lack of time, it was hard to release that as an "English Teacher X" book when at that time I wasn't English Teacher X, nor did I have any idea I would be.

I might get around to writing it someday; I'll post a link here if I do.

This is sad news. I've been reading your blog for many years now, and have read a bunch of your books. Great mix of humor, Crazy Bob stories, and insights about life.

Since this is the end, how about a final update on where things stand with the Girlfriend? And a big reveal about which city in the Dirty South you're from -- I've always been curious about that.

Most importantly -- as long as you're going to leave the blog up anyway, why not just do the occasional update, like once a year or so?

Anyway, thanks for all the great writing. It's always been one of my favorite blogs.

X,

Thanks for all the great posts, stories, pictures, and books. I gave them out as gifts to my fellow TESOL students, and were enjoyed and circulated well beyond our class. Thanks for asking me to review one of your educational books. You'll be missed.

From one middle-aged Gen-X'er to another,

Good luck!

Brian

Woah, I'm kinda shocked! I myself did the JET program back in '05 and your blog was definitely an inspiration to get abroad and live the life. Been following ever since, even after returning to the US, settling down, getting a job and starting a family... sad to see you go but definitely understand that it's time to spiral off the internet and enjoy meatspace to its fullest!

Best of luck! Let us know if you ever start something else somewhere!

'Bout fuckin' time you jacked it in and sought help, you sick cunt.

Just kidding, enjoyed the ramblings immensely over the years, the art too, but you're right, human contact is the way to go; peel the face from that vicious little screen and live an x-free life. You know it makes sense.

Lets have one last release of all your hot Russian pics, uncensored this time (it was so long ago who cares now?) Fapping is more of a thrill when you know the backstory.

You know, my pictures never really got much more graphic than the ones I posted. The girls were actually pretty canny about allowing their faces to be photographed in REALLY compromising acts, but most of them didn't mind some underwear shots. Didn't mind? Hell, it was their idea half the time.

englishteacherx said...

As far as where I'm from in the south -- the name of the nearest big city is actually stated once in the REQUIEM FOR A VAGABOND book.

So what are we waiting for? Final final post blowout of all the underwear pics with faces (and REALLY compromising ones without). It would be a fine way to go out, much better than fading away with a meh.

I actually don't think I have many different ones than the ones I posted. You can go back and do a scavanger hunt for them.

I just read your book Samara book adventures 6 months ago and then just discovered your blog. Unfortunately, I was really late to the party. Hope to meet you on the circuit one day when you finagle a tier 1 job. You're pretty resourceful so I don't doubt you'll get there.

Hey English Teacher X
Read almost all your books. Really enjoyed them, and reading your blog for the past couple of years. Shame that it's the end, but that's life.
Wish you all the best, and thank you for your творчество
Спасибо!

Hey! I've been a fan of you for years, and read all of your books. I think if anything, reading them put me off english teaching!

Despite that, you've really inspired me with your international adventures, and if my life is as half as interesting as yours, I'd consider it well lived.

Thanks for the good writing, cheers, and all the best!

Hi X, I only discovered your blog a couple years ago. I enjoyed it immensely. I really liked your tales and observations about life. I think your writing is great. I bought all your travel books and enjoyed them as well.

If you do post any more material, updates or whatever, I would definitely read it with interest.

Love the pics over the years of the GF frolicking on the beach ha ha.

Thanks, and best of luck!

Good decision, it's been boring as shit for years. You missed your chance with Roosh to get on the Red Pill movement and become relevant.

Hey man, I love the blog and your writing. I agree with your observations on the internet. It is definitely not the same place as 15 years ago.

The tricks for manipulating people are driving the web, not content. But I am very glad you published as much as you did, even if you did not get rewarded as much as you deserve.

I wish you all the best.

The world is indeed a strange place. Roosh, who has his detractors but does at times have something to say, in his last post seeks donations because the big platforms (Amazon, youtube)are giving him such a hard time.

Good content like this blog escapes the notice of many.

Meanwhile, people like Logan Paul who as far as I can tell appeals to teenagers by being big and goofy and just ahead of them in mental development, become massive internet stars.

Even someone like Jordan Taylor might be up-and-coming, and all she does is post inane commentary about how the ocean is beautiful in the places she travels to(while prancing around in a bikini sometimes, or showing off tight clothes or cleavage). As Roosh might say, if a guy posted those videos, would anyone watch them? Although there is that brilliant post where she draws a jagged line and explains how she funds her travels by day-trading $10,000, that one is treat. Nice ass though.

The world is a strange place, the internet even stranger maybe.

The "relevant" Man-o-sphere lost me when they refused to change their name The He Man Woman Hater's Club. I never went back.

Do they still use the term "manospher" and are they still using that Red Pill analogy? I always thought that was pretty funny, since all of them would be broke and unknown without the internet, and they spend most of their time there. I don't know what they swallowed but it sure wasn't a pill that showed them non-virutal reality.

Anonymous said...

"Broke and unknown". You mean like you?

englishteacherx said...

I'm not broke baby, and you could probably guess that a guy who calls himself English Teacher X enjoys his anonymity. I make a comfortably upper middle class salary as an English teacher now and I'm currently in Mexico on one of my total three months of paid vacation per year. How much paid vacation do you get, Red Pill Popper?

Anonymous said...

As much vacation as I want since I run my own business. Something I thank the red pill for. Give it a shot - it's exhilarating. All you need is a 130+ IQ and motivation.

Anonymous said...

Horse shit, you spend 10 hours a day sitting in front of the keyboard praying that your affiliates pay you. Or you beg for change, like Roosh.

englishteacherx said...

I spent a year doing it and I found it wasn't like a paid holiday, it was like always working. I would be walking down the street in Budapest or swimming in Thailand while constantly thinking about book covers or keywords.

As the succesful true-crime podcaster on "Sword and Scale" put it, "I went from having one boss to having a million bosses."

Do you still make money writing porn? Or is that dead too?

I only came across your books and site a few years ago, and some insights are really good. In a sense you are very hypocritical as all that you criticized you keep doing : teaching, traveling and russian girlfriend. But I really enjoyed the blog. And you write from the heart being sincere, and that can only be a good thing. As a final curtain, would you make your books free for a week, what a propper way to say to goodbye... being generous I really wish you all the best,

Surprisingly I made about $30,000 total from writing in 2015 and 2016; last year was no more than $500 a month, however. But that's not an insignificant amount.

I was hoping there'd be one last book! I've read and enjoyed them all immensely.

A yearly update would be nice!

All the best!
