GF Update

All right since everybody seems to be dying to hear it:

Yes, I am still with the Girlfriend, she has come to China several times.

After seeing all the difficulties at the school I work at, however, she is not very enthusiastic about leaving her job and moving there. (Teachers for the new semester are making sometimes half the salary that I'm making.) Plus her mother and grandmother need some support in Russia.

She wants me to come back to Russia; there are international schools in Russia, mainly in St. Petersburg and Moscow, that pay a decent wage in the usual international school bracket of $3000 - $5000 USD a month, but currently my qualifications aren't quite there.

(There's basically no way I would go back to working in chain language schools and I've never liked doing private lessons, though it can pay well.)

Failing that, she suggests I buy an apartment in Russia (they can be had in the $40,000 range) and just live with her on the holidays while working in Saudi until I can retire.

Russia in general is completely different than it was when I was there, and people who think you could just over there now and effortlessly bang a bunch of hot chicks, or even easily find a nice normal girlfriend, probably have their heads up their asses. Girls I know who used to be ardent sluts and English groupies now spend a lot of time posting angry things on Russian social media about Syria, America, and the values of patriotism, sobriety, family, and nationalism.

Russia has some advantages beyond sluts, of course -- history, some nice albeit cold natural attractions, and currently a low cost of living if you have dollars.

I think of moving back to Russia, though, and it just gives me a sick feeling in my stomach. Whether it's just that I dislike jingoism or it just makes me think of endless drunkenness and hangovers, I'm not entirely sure.

But I spent a lot of time there, and it was cold and dark, dark, dark . . .

Give me a year or 2 at my new post in St. Pete and I may be able to help you out. We've exchanged emails before so you know how to get in touch. I'm way north of 5k a month if you consider a full apt in center of town and retirement.

How do they do retirement? We pay into social security in China but they just cash it out and give it back to us when we leave.

no, it's still pretty easy to find girls. you just need to use tinder or badoo

Great, the GF is still in! Excellent. Glad the long-distance relationship hasn't done her in. She definitely seems more committed than many.

Interesting questions about moving to Russia, buying an apartment there, etc. I assume the apartment idea pertains to Vodkaberg.

Yeah, that Tinder thing, I'm like my dad with internet banking -- I have no idea where to start and am afraid I'd fuck something up somehow, so I don't even want to try. I now Crazy Bob has used Tinder on a few trips to Russia recently.

Yes, the apartment would be in Samara, also known as Vodkaberg.

Retirement - 7, 8, 9 or 10% of the base salary (dependent upon teacher contribution) contributed directly to
an account in your name offered through school-approved plans

So is Russia a viable teaching destination these days for those NOT mainly interested in booze and women?

I would imagine there are still plenty of places to teach English, especially outside of the larger cities where there are fewer foreigners. As everywhere, it's getting harder to qualify for a work visa.

Do you need to get a criminal background check to work in Russia? I have a few misdemeanors from years ago.

I worked in Kazan. and no you don't need a records check, so strange. but you need lost of random medical test and verified copies of everything. email the local schools in citifies, not the chains. they all respond, especially if you know Russian. I've been in Russia about two years. it's pretty nice. well my city is.

You do realize that a drunken whoremonger's dismissal of family and sobriety, in the subtext of women being more difficult for said whoremonger to seduce, doesn't exactly lend the best moral platform to argue against jingoism?

You're essentially the jingoist argument. Enjoy it.

Lively city, Kazan, it seemed very cool. What salaries they paying these days?

For my job in St. Pete, my employer specifically asked if you've ever been arrested for anything and you sign a waiver that gives them the right to conduct a background check.

Uh yeah, anonymous, you clearly didn't bother to look up jingoism and just assumed it meant "moral absolutism" or something similar.

jin·go·ism
ˈjiNGɡōˌizəm/Submit
nounderogatory
extreme patriotism, especially in the form of aggressive or warlike foreign policy.
synonyms: extreme patriotism, chauvinism, extreme nationalism, xenophobia, flag-waving; More

Nobody BUT a whoremonger and moral relativist could successfully argue against jingoism.

Totally agree. X seems to be off Russia because they are back on their feet and their women are not throwing themselves at men like him. Pretty infantile.

That being said Russia is still full of beautiful and available women. It's just that they are more into stable lasting relationships and not a drunken shag like most Western chics still are.

Grow up X.

I have not been chronically drunk nor a whoremonger since 2009, and have in fact been in a lasting if not particularly stable relationship since then.

"Whether it's just that I dislike jingoism or (Russia) just makes me think of endless drunkenness and hangovers, I'm not entirely sure." - end

"Guys who think you can go over there and effortlessly bang a bunch of hot chicks ... probably have their heads up their assses." - middle

Grow up and finish reading before you post, posters.

Anybody who thinks Russia is "on its feet again" and actually lives there is somebody who has a Western salary or inheritance and is probably exploiting the low value of the ruble to fund their standard of living. It's back like it was in 2000 -- some super-rich and a lot of poor. The burgeoning middle class is gone now and the malls are all empty. You could blame all this on the sanctions, or you could blame the power-hungry, journalist-killing leader of the country, who is too busy staging invasions to diversify or modernize the oil-based economy.

Always funny when a @Rusophile with a political bone to pick paints Russia in a negative light. So Russia is like every other country on Earth and has a small wealthy elite. Who would have guessed? How dare they!

Yeah, funny how we cheer when people rise up and overthrow a totalitarian government in which all of the power and the money is in the hands of a tiny minority -- but when it's a "democracy" and "free market" in which the few have everything, those poor bastards in the 99 percent just deserve it because they're lazy.

X, Would you recommend Vodkaberg as a place to spend a while and purely chase pussy? The Vodkaberg region is suppose to have some of the best women, but maybe bigger cities will yield better results in the short term?

English Teacher X said...

I don't know about Samara and environs these days for women -- I think it's a sort of a center of nationalism and anti-foreigner sentiment actually. A lot of the famous Russian hackers live in that area.
